Act 5 Scene 1- Haley

1) 5.1- At the beginning of the scene, the gravedigger and someone else are arguing about whether or not Ophelia deserves a Christian burial. The gravedigger doesn't think that she deserves a Christian burial because he thinks she died out of suicide. The other person said that if she had no money then she wouldn't be having a Christian burial. Hamlet and Horatio come into the graveyard and watch in the distance. As Hamlet sees the skulls being excavated to make room for the new grave he starts to wonder what kind of jobs those skulls have. As the funeral starts, Hamlet still doesn't know who the funeral is being held for but he can tell that it was most likely for a suicide because it seemed "maimed". Hamlet and Horatio hide as the burial is going on but Hamlet can see that it is Ophelia when they put her in the ground. While that is happening, Laertes gets mad at the priest because the priest said that doing a Christian burial would offend the dead. Hamlet becomes outraged and jumps in the grave shouting that he would do anything to stay with Ophelia like eat a crocodile or be buried alive with her.

3) 5.1- Hamlet- why were you and Horatio hiding at the beginning of the funeral? Priest- why did you say that a Christian burial would offend the dead?

6) I feel like Hamlet actually does love Ophelia by the way he acted at the funeral. If he didn't love her he would've just blown off her death and not thought much about it but when he jumped into the grave with her and said that he would do anything to stay with her showed how much he cared for her.

Character Committees - Haley

Ophelia

1) She is going insane from her father dying.
2) She wants to show everyone how she feels about her father's death.
3) She's mad at Hamlet.
4) Gertrude, Laertes, and Claudius are all worried about Ophelia.
5) Everyone's attention is on her during scene 5 only.
6) It lets us know how the family is acting. I didn't really learn anything new. I didn't gain any insights from Hamlet.
7) Why she is going so insane.
8) How Ophelia felt that Hamlet killed her father. She is shaken up and going insane.
Act 4 Scenes 1-3

1) 4.1-3 - Gertrude is very worried about Hamlet so she goes to talk to Claudius. She tells him that he is "as mad as the sea in a violent storm". She also told him that Hamlet had killed Polonius. He tells Gertrude that he must send Hamlet to England asap and find a way to explain what Hamlet did to the court. In scene 2, the scene is opened up by Hamlet hiding Polonius' body by saying "safely stowed". When Hamlet is asked where he hid the body he never gives a definite answer.

2) 4.1-3 - This scene is important because without it, the play would be very confusing as to what Hamlet decided to do with Claudius.

3) 4.1-3 - Gertrude - how did you feel when you saw Hamlet stab Polonius? Claudius - are you scared now that Hamlet is out to kill you?

Act 3 scenes 3 and 4

1) 3.3 and 3.4- Scene 3 is mainly about the aftermath of the play. Claudius tells Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to take Hamlet to England. Claudius also decides to tell the audience why he killed his brother and he tries to pray. While he is knelt down, Hamlet comes behind him and draws up his sword as if to kill Claudius but he stopped. He thought that if he killed him while he was praying, Claudius would go to heaven. Hamlet decided to try to kill Claudius while he was sinning so he would go to hell. After Hamlet leaves, Claudius rises and says that he is unable to pray. In scene 4 Polonius is hiding in Gertrudes room. Hamlet goes into her room and startles Gertrude. When Gertrude starts panicking, Polonius comes out and Hamlet thinks that Polonius is Claudius so he stabs him to death. Hamlet then yells at his own mother for marrying Claudius. While Hamlet is yelling at his mom, the Ghost comes and visits again and reminds Hamlet that his real purpose is to avenge his father's death. Hamlet tells Gertrude to stop sleeping with Claudius. He ends the scene by dragging out Polonius' body.

3) 3.4-Hamlet- How did you feel after you realized you stabbed Polonius and not Claudius? Gertrude- What were your thoughts while Hamlet was yelling at you? Hamlet- How startled were you when the Ghost came back?

7) 3.4- I feel kind of sorry for Gertrude because Hamlet is taking all of his anger out on her and yelling at her for marrying Claudius. But in the end its not completely her fault because if Claudius wouldn't have killed King Hamlet then Claudius wouldn't even be in the picture.

Act 3 scene 1

Act 3 Scene 1
 1) 3.1- This scene is about everyone spying on Hamlet to find out why he is so insane. Polonius sends Ophelia somewhere where Hamlet would encounter her. When they started talking, Hamlet was being nice and then closer to the end of their conversation he started to be mean to Ophelia. Claudius says that Hamlet's behavior is not caused by love. He then sends Hamlet on an embassy to England. Polonius tells Claudius to not send Hamlet until Gertrude talks to him after the play which occurs later that night.

2) 3.1- I feel like Hamlet's whole monologue is very important because it shows how he felt and if we didn't know how he felt then we would wonder more about why he is acting the way he is.

3) 3.1- Hamlet- Why were you so rude to Ophelia? Ophelia- How did you feel when Hamlet told you to go to the nunnery? Getrude- what are you going to talk to Hamlet about?

Summary of Act 1

Act 1 scene 1 was primarily about the ghost visiting the castle. Even though the ghost comes, he just stands still and doesn't say anything before vanishing. Also, this is not the first time the ghost has appeared, he has come twice before. Everyone is quite positive that the ghost is the late King Hamlet of Denmark.

Act 1 scene 2 on the other hand is about the King's coronation. They also hold the funeral of his father's death. Soon after the funeral, he announces that he is getting married. Everyone is skeptical about him getting married this close to his father's funeral. He says he is doing this to balance the mourning of the funeral with the excitement of the wedding. The King also sends Cornelius and Voltimand to Norway to give Fortinbra's Uncle a letter basically saying "Tell your nephew to stop threatening Denmark." Also, Hamlet asks to attend his old school in Wittenberg but he is told no. At the end of the scene, Marcellus and Horatio swore they saw the dead King dressed in full armor, so they decided to tell Hamlet.

In act 1 scene 3, Laertes gives advice to Ophelia about Hamlet. He feels that Hamlet isn't a good option for Ophelia to be dating, even though Ophelia is in love with him. Laertes thinks that Hamlet is just going to use Ophelia until he finds someone better to date. Usually, class levels don't mix and since Hamlet is royalty and Ophelia isn't, their relationship most likely wouldn't work out in the end.

During act 1 scene 4, Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus all meet at the battlement in the castle. While waiting for the Ghost to come, they look through the windows and see a drunk Claudius, Hamlet is disgusted. When the Ghost finally comes, Hamlet is curious as to if the Ghost is friendly or if he is evil. The Ghost then asks Hamlet to come with him to tell him why he is here. Marcellus and Horatio try to get Hamlet to stay with them, but he goes anyways.

The last scene, the Ghost tells Hamlet that he is his father's spirit. He said that Claudius poisoned him and Hamlet needs to seek revenge. The Ghost says that Claudius has Corrupted Denmark and Gertrude. The ghost then leaves as the sun goes down. When Hamlet and Marcellus come back into the room, they see that Hamlet is shaken up and they ask what happened. Hamlet refuses to tell them because he doesn't want them knowing what the ghost said.

1) 1.5- The ghost comes back and begins to talk to Hamlet, claiming to be his father's spirit. The ghost tells Hamlet to seek revenge on Claudius. The ghost tells Hamlet that Claudius has corrupted Denmark and Gertrude. The ghost leaves when the sun goes down. When Horatio and Marcellus enter the room, they see that Hamlet is shaken up and they ask what happened to him but Hamlet refuses to tell them.

3) 1.5- Why did Hamlet decide to not tell Marcellus and Horatio about him seeing the ghost? Why does the ghost think that Claudius corrupted Denmark and Gertrude? Why does Hamlet not want Marcellus and Horatio to tell anyone that he was shaken up?

7) 1.5- I kind of feel bad for Hamlet because he just got visited by the ghost which he thinks is his father. Also when the ghost comes he tells Hamlet to avenge his death. I just feel like that's a lot to handle at one time. He was so worried about all of this he didn't even want his friends knowing about what happened.

1) 1.3 - This scene is about Laertes giving Ophelia advice on Hamlet. Ophelia is falling in love with Hamlet but Laertes doesn't like it. Laertes basically tells Ophelia "block Hamlet on everything, delete him out of your life or you will have consequences and I will duel Hamlet" The reason why Laertes doesn't like Hamlet is because, Hamlet is royalty and Ophelia isn't and Laertes feels like Hamlet is just going to use Ophelia and lead her on and then find someone in his class that is better.

3) 1.3 - Ophelia - What makes you like Hamlet so much? Will you still love him even after your brother gave you all that advice?  Hamlet - Even though Ophelia feels strongly about you, how do you feel about her?

6) 1.3 - I feel like Laertes cares deeply about Ophelia considering the way he acts about her and Hamlet. You can tell this by the way he talks to her while giving her advice and the way he wants to duel Hamlet if they continue talking. Even though they talked i feel like Ophelia will still go after Hamlet because she is in love with him.

1) 1.2 - In this scene of Hamlet, the King has his coronation and gives a speech to everyone. He has told everyone about his decision on why he has decided to marry so soon after his father's death. He says that it is to balance the mourning with the excitement of his marriage. The king married his brother's widow and the mother of Prince Hamlet. The King also sends Cornelius and Voltimand to Norway to give Fortinbra's Uncle a note basically saying "Tell your nephew to stop threatening to attack Denmark". Polonius allows Laertes to go to France. Hamlet asked to attend his old school in Wittenberg and Claudius says that he does not wish for Hamlet to do so. At the end of the scene, Marcellus and Horatio swore that they saw the dead King dressed in full armor, so they decided to tell Hamlet.

2) 1.2 - I feel like it is significant because without it we wouldn't know why the King did what he did and we wouldn't know that Fortinbra is planning on attacking Denmark. Without this scene the play would be very confusing and wouldn't have the background needed to make a clear statement.

3) 1.2 - Hamlet - Why did you want to go back to your old school? Fortinbra - Why were you planning on attacking Denmark? Question to anyone - when C/V were sent to Norway with the letter, what was the response since Fortinbra's uncle didn't know what was going on?
